The Easiest Walking Taco Recipe

The past three weeks have been a series of unfortunate events. First, I got sick and took a rapid Covid test that returned negative. Brett thought he dodged whatever I got but started showing symptoms about a week later. He ended up taking a Covid test: positive. So, we had to cancel our flights days before we were supposed to leave, which resulted in missing a surprise birthday party for Brett, a wedding, and a blog collab. It’s been a crappy few weeks, and I didn’t have the energy or motivation to blog. However, we’re finally starting to feel human again, so I kindly asked Brett to share his easy walking taco recipe before returning to work.

What is a walking taco?

Admittedly, I didn’t know until Brett made it for me. It’s essentially a taco in a bag. Genius, right? I’m unsure if I lived under a rock or if walking tacos are severely underrated. Either way, I’m hooked. Customizable to everyone’s taste and with minimal cleanup, they’re perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or an easy way to feed a crowd. Note: some people call it Frito pie, but since Brett introduced it to me as walking tacos, we call it walking tacos in our household.

Walking Taco Ingredients

This walking taco recipe is a single-serving bag of Doritos loaded with meat, cheese, and traditional taco toppings. You can substitute any of the ingredients or add other toppings like guacamole.

  • Ground beef — Ground chicken or turkey works too.
  • Doritos in individual serving bags — You can also use Fritos.
  • Taco seasoning
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Shredded cheese — We typically use cheddar because we usually have it on hand but use whatever you prefer. Also, we recently started freshly shredding our cheese from a block as much as possible. I highly recommend trying it over buying pre-shredded.
  • Sour cream
How To Make Walking Tacos
  1. In a skillet, brown the ground beef and add the taco seasoning (follow the directions on the back of the packet).
  2. Crush the bag of chips and cut along the side, so it’s boat-shaped for easier access to dig in.
  3. Layer with ground beef, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream.

We LOVE walking tacos! add chopped tomatoes or a scoop of salsa to make it supreme. We’ve also tried them with cool ranch Doritos as a yummy twist.

These are so fun! Do you belong to Costco? They have a box of walking taco chips that open horizontally to make it easier! I think they are half Fritos and half Doritos! Ha!
I am so sorry for the illnesses and all of the missed events. That really stinks!

  18. I call them walking tacos too, and they are SO GOOD. You can actually buy walking taco versions of chips (like Doritos/Fritos) that are wider and easier to eat out of. I found this out last year when I did walking tacos for a party.
